Pediatric respiratory patients in Ho Chi Minh City increased

In the first 10 months of the year, Ho Chi Minh City children's hospitals admitted more than 39,000 children with respiratory diseases, of which 223 died. The health sector warned that the disease would continue to increase in the last months of the year.

On November 19, Director of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health Tang Chi Thuong said that for many years, respiratory infections have been one of the serious diseases in children. Among them, diseases such as pneumonia and bronchiolitis are increasing at the end of the year.

"What is worrying is that when the number of cases increases periodically, the number of severe cases and deaths will increase unavoidably if there is a lack of synchronous coordination between all levels," Mr. Thuong said, adding that the three children's hospitals Ho Chi Minh City often receives treatment of severe cases transferred from hospitals in the southern region.

According to the head of Ho Chi Minh City's health sector, the number of cases, inpatient treatment and deaths of this group of diseases since the beginning of the year has increased slightly compared to 2021 and 2022 (the years of the Covid-19 outbreak). but still much lower than in the years before the Covid epidemic (the period from 2015-2020).

To date, the health sector has not recorded any unusually prominent pathogens, most of which are still common causes of respiratory infections in children such as seasonal influenza virus, Adeno virus, RSV, Haemophilus bacteria. influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

Respiratory infections often increase in the last months of the year when the weather starts to get cold and rain a lot. Most pediatric patients who die from respiratory diseases have underlying chronic diseases such as a history of premature birth, low birth weight, chronic lung disease, birth defects, immunodeficiency, congenital hematological diseases...

"This is a complex group of diseases. Reducing the mortality rate of this group of diseases in children is still a challenge for pediatrics not only in our country but also in developed countries," Mr. Thuong shared.

Experts recommend that people practice good environmental hygiene, personal hygiene, regularly wear masks, wash hands with soap, cover mouth when coughing or sneezing, do not spit indiscriminately... to help limit prevent the spread of pathogens in the community.
