It's only in the rainy season, but the number of children infected with dengue fever has increased rapidly. At children's hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City, many cases when hospitalized became severe, requiring mechanical ventilation and dialysis.
Ms. NNLQ, residing in Long An, the mother of LNMH (seven years old) who is on a ventilator at the Intensive Care Unit - Anti-Poisoning Department of Children's Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City), said that baby H was hospitalized on the second day of dengue fever. dengue) in a state of high fever.
Hospitalization when the disease is severe
According to Ms. Q, before that, baby H had a fever of 40 degrees Celsius, and when she went to the clinic, no SHX fever was detected. The next day, seeing that the high fever did not go down, she took the child to the Children's Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City. The baby was treated at the Infection Department, then the disease became serious, so he was transferred to the Intensive Care - Anti-poisoning Department.
Also at City Children's Hospital, Ms. VTTC (Dong Nai) is taking care of a 12-year-old child with dengue fever. “Last year, she had dengue fever, afraid that it would be severe again, so she had a fever for 48 hours, so I took her to get tested and immediately moved here. At the time of admission, the baby's blood began to concentrate, the doctor gave him fluids, then the disease progressed so he had to be on a ventilator," said Ms. C.
The child with a disability (12 years old, living in Dong Nai) was admitted to Children's Hospital 2 on the afternoon of July 10 due to dengue fever on the third day. Ms. TTM (the baby's mother) said that the baby had signs of abdominal pain, fatigue, and high fever before, but she only lowered the fever because she thought she had a common cold due to going to the rain.
“The next day, the baby still had a fever, so I took him to the hospital to be examined and tested, and the doctor diagnosed dengue fever. Worried that the disease would get worse because the baby was being treated for nephritis, the family asked to move to Ho Chi Minh City. She is currently being treated at the Infection Department's emergency room," said Ms.
Severe cases increased compared to the previous year
At the Children's Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City, in June, 2023, 325 cases of dengue examination and inpatient treatment were received, and 105 cases were received.
On July 10, the Infection Department was treating 10 cases, including three severe cases, one case of dengue fever on Wednesday was being infused. The Department of Intensive Care - Anti-toxicity treated six severe cases requiring mechanical ventilation (all from the province), one on dialysis. On July 11, the number of severe cases requiring intravenous fluids in the Infection Department increased to four.
Doctor of CKII Le Vu Phuong Thy, Head of the Department of Intensive Care - Anti-poison, said that the number of dengue cases is not higher than last year, but the number of severe cases has increased rapidly for more than two weeks now.
“The dialysis case was admitted to the hospital in a state of respiratory failure, circulatory failure, mechanical ventilation. Severe disease, kidney failure should be dialysis. The baby was hospitalized on the fourth day of the illness, has been treated here for 13 days, is expected to have dialysis in 1-2 weeks " - Dr. Thy added.
At Children's Hospital 1, the department of dengue - hematology is treating 15 cases, including one case of dengue shock receiving fluids. At the Intensive Care Unit - anti-poison, is treating two severe cases, both hospitalized in the case of dengue shock.
"It's the rainy season, dengue starts in the season, so the number of cases will continue to increase, it is expected that around the end of July to August will peak" - Dr. determined.
Need to pay attention to the early signs
According to Dr. Dr. Nguyen Minh Tuan, Head of the Department of Dentistry and Hematology at Children's Hospital 1, 10% of cases come to the department for dengue examination in a severe state.
“Some people do not recognize the signs of dengue fever in children, mistaken for a normal fever. There are also people who are subjective, thinking that the child with dengue will recover quickly, so they do not take him to the doctor soon… If the child has a fever for two days or more and does not go down, it is necessary to take the child immediately to a qualified medical facility for a proper assessment of the condition. disease” - Dr. Tuan recommended.
Dr. Ly Hoa Anh Minh, Department of Infections at Children's Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City, said that in addition to the above reasons, there is another reason why children get worse, that is, the child has been diagnosed with dengue but is not treated according to the protocol of the Ministry of Health.
“Some children with dengue received intravenous fluids at home before going to the hospital for treatment. While according to the protocol of the Ministry of Health, children are only given fluids at the hospital when indicated, "- Dr. Minh emphasized. At the same time, warn children to reduce fever but abdominal pain, vomiting, fatigue, and lethargy are warning signs of dengue in a dangerous stage, they must be taken to the hospital immediately.
“People are focusing on hand-foot-and-mouth disease, often forgetting about dengue. If the child's high fever does not go down for two days, the child should be taken to the hospital for timely testing and treatment," advised Dr. Nguyen Dinh Qui, Department of Infections at Children's Hospital 2.
