Don't ignore the telltale signs of H5N1 flu infection

H5N1 is transmitted from poultry to humans, through contact through livestock or by eating infected livestock. This is a very dangerous strain of influenza, with a high rate of complications and death in humans. There is currently no evidence that H5N1 spreads from person to person.

Signs of influenza A H5N1 vary from person to person. Symptoms include fever of 38°C or higher, cough, body and muscle aches, sore throat, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, stuffy or runny nose, pink eye (conjunctivitis) ). Characteristic symptoms are dry cough, high fever may be accompanied by chills.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, it is not possible to diagnose H5N1 through symptoms alone, because the patient's symptoms are similar to those of the common flu. Doctors often order testing samples taken from patients' nasal secretions.

Bird flu can cause serious breathing problems, including shortness of breath, pneumonia, respiratory distress or acute respiratory failure. Patients sometimes develop secondary bacterial infections. In some cases, patients experience seizures, mood swings, multiple organ failure, or septic shock.

People who have frequent contact with wild birds and poultry are at high risk of infection. In particular, the group that is easily transferred are pregnant women, people with weakened immune systems, and people aged 65 years and older.

Poultry farmers are at high risk of H5N1 flu. Therefore, doctors recommend this group to take precautions, use protective equipment. If people do not work in the poultry industry, people need to stay away from poultry farms and markets.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends caution if you come into contact with mallards or other aquatic birds. Always wash your hands properly and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. If you develop symptoms of cough and fever after visiting an area with avian flu, contact the nearest health center.
