Lassa hemorrhagic fever has killed at least 10 people in Ebonyi state, Nigeria since the beginning of this year.
Sampson Orogwu, disease surveillance officer at Ebonyi health authority, said that from January 4 to February 16, there were 25 cases of infection, including two health workers. The 10 deaths include a pregnant woman and two children, according to People Gazette Nigeria.
Mr. Orogwu urged people to report suspected cases of Lassa fever, emphasizing that treatment for the disease is free.
Lassa fever is an acute hemorrhagic disease caused by the Lassa virus, a member of the arenavirus family. People infected with Lassa virus often come into contact with food or household items containing urine or feces of Mastomys rats carrying the disease.
The disease is common in West Africa. Most infected people have mild symptoms such as fever and headache.
Mr. Orogwu called for increased logistics and surveillance to minimize risks, and advised people to stop burning forests, eating rats and touching any surfaces previously touched by infected people.
The Nigeria Center for Disease Control said that in 2023, at least 219 deaths were recorded out of 1,227 cases of Lassa fever.
