According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dengue is on the rise and is present in more than 100 countries, and an estimated 100-400 million people are infected every year. In Vietnam, according to the Ministry of Health, each year, on average, about 100,000 to 300,000 people get sick, about over 100 deaths. In the first 6 months of 2023, the whole country recorded more than 46,000 cases and 11 deaths in most of the southern provinces and cities.

In Hanoi, dengue is an annual disease, recently, an average of 14,000 cases are recorded each year. Since the beginning of the year, the whole city has recorded more than 1,500 cases, the number of cases increased by 41% over the same period in 2022.

Information from the National Children's Hospital said that from the beginning of the year until now, the Hospital's Tropical Diseases Center has received 120 children with dengue for examination and treatment. In which, there are more than 50 hospitalized children with warning signs, children hospitalized for dengue treatment are diverse in age, fortunately, there is no case of death.

One of the most severe patients up to now, being treated at the Center for Tropical Diseases (National Children's Hospital) is boy VH (8 years old, in Hanoi). The child has a history of first dengue infection 4 years ago. On July 16, 2023, the child appeared with a high fever of 39-40 degrees Celsius, did not respond to antipyretic drugs, body aches, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, poor appetite, was brought in by the family. The National Children's Hospital examines and is hospitalized for treatment. At the time of admission, the child had a high fever continuously, had dengue on the face, but then appeared a rapid pulse, low blood pressure, increased liver enzymes... the doctors treated the child according to the protocol of the Ministry of Health. about severe dengue. Currently, after treatment, the child is stable and discharged after 10 days of treatment.

As for a child in Ho Chi Minh City (11 years old, in Hanoi) who was also hospitalized for dengue fever, there were warning signs, and the child had also had dengue before. The child was admitted to the hospital on the 5th day of illness with the following symptoms: Abdominal pain, intermittent fever, repeated vomiting, poor eating, was treated at a hospital near home but did not get better.

Ms. Tran Thi Nhi Ha - Director of the Hanoi Department of Health said: The increase in dengue fever has many objective and subjective causes, according to which the epidemic increases in the general context of the epidemic situation in the world and in Vietnam. Male. The change of prolonged hot weather affects the reproduction and development of disease-transmitting mosquitoes.

Besides, natural factors favor the development of disease-transmitting mosquitoes; The process of urbanization takes place, many human-made scraps and wastes are not collected and treated in a timely manner, creating favorable conditions for mosquitoes to lay eggs and develop. On the other hand, due to the large mobility of the population, many students, migrant workers, and crowded living conditions, creating favorable conditions for the outbreak of dengue disease. The current epidemic prevention and control activities are still facing many difficulties, people are still subjectively ignoring the epidemic, underestimating the importance of disease prevention and control.

Ms. Ha emphasized, people absolutely do not be subjective and neglect the dengue epidemic, because anyone can get dengue from the elderly, young children or young people... To date, there is no vaccine to prevent dengue and no medicine to treat it. Specific treatment, the main and effective preventive measure is to kill mosquitoes, kill larva, larva and prevent mosquito bites.

To actively prevent diseases for themselves, their families and people around, people take the following preventive measures: Cover all water containers to prevent mosquitoes from entering and laying eggs; Take weekly measures to kill larval mites and larvae by releasing fish into large water containers; wash small and medium-sized water containers, turn non-water containers upside down; change the vase water; Put salt or oil in a bowl of water to support the pantry.

Weekly removal of waste materials, natural water holes that do not allow mosquitoes to lay eggs such as bottles, jars, bottle fragments, coconut shells, broken jars, tires, old car tires, bamboo holes, leaf sheaths...; Sleep under mosquito nets, wear long clothes to prevent mosquito bites even during the day; Actively coordinate with the health sector in chemical spraying for epidemic prevention and control. In particular, when having a fever, go to a medical facility immediately for examination and treatment advice, do not arbitrarily treat at home.
